Activists plan to blockade several areas of the Ukrainian border in protest against Russian aggression
Activists from the "Union of Transnistrians of Ukraine" have decided to join in support of a campaign already underway by Crimean Tatars to block the border between Crimea and Ukraine along the Kherson region.
In solidarity with the Crimean Tatars, Ukrainian-Transnistrian activists plan to block the border between Ukraine (in the Odessa region) and the unrecognized nation of Transnistria. According to the group's leader, Oleg Khvoshchevsky, other activists inside Moldova will block the border from the other side.
It's still unclear how thorough the activists intend their blockade to be. In Crimea, for instance, protesters have announced their intention to allow passenger vehicles to pass, but not delivery trucks and larger cars.
Crimean Tatars plan to stage their blockade on September 20 on three different roads. The leader of that group, Refat Chubarov, told journalists that it is "immoral to provide [food] to the [Russian] occupying army." He says he hopes the act will be an effective way to put pressure on Moscow.
The Ukrainian ultranationalist group Right Sector (banned in Russia as an extremist organization) has also expressed its readiness to support such actions.
Crimea's Russian leadership, meanwhile, says the possible suspension of grocery imports from Ukraine would not significantly affect the peninsula's food supply.
