Russian and Ukrainian UN delegations skip each other's General Assembly speeches

In a sign on ongoing tensions between the two nations, both the Russian and Ukrainian UN delegations exited the General Assembly hall during speeches by the other country's president. Yesterday, ahead of Petro Poroshenko's address, all but one member of the Russian delegation left the hall in protest. Today, September 28, the Ukrainian delegation returned the favor, ahead of Vladimir Putin's speech.

  • In his address to the UN General Assembly, Putin focused his remarks on managing the campaign against ISIL and ending the civil war in Syria, where Moscow supports a coalition to back Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom Washington says must leave office. Putin also criticized the United States' supposed role in orchestrating revolutions around the world to "spread democracy."
