Health official calls on Russians to stop eating sushi
The head of Rospotrebnadzor, Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing, has recommended that Russians stop eating sushi made with raw fish. "Eating raw fish isn't a humane way to treat oneself," Anna Popova announced today.
According to the news agency TASS, Popova's remarks apply not only to rolls and sushi, but to all raw fish. Popova assures consumers that Rospotrebnadzor and the Russian Surgeon General regularly inspect businesses that serve food, though these checks are not daily or even monthly, she cautions.
Despite her warning, Popova pointed out that no contaminated fish have been discovered in Moscow, and the recent cases of contaminated fish in Siberia have been limited and contained with more frequent inspections.
