Russian safety workers have uncovered 270,000 safety violations since March, and they're only 2/3 of the way through nationwide inspections

Federal Emergency Management Agency workers say they’ve uncovered 270,000 safety violations at shopping centers, movie theaters, hotels, and other public facilities since the deadly fire at a shopping mall in Kemerovo this March.

According to the news agency TASS, officials have charged more than 17,000 people with related administrative offenses. Federal officials are about two-thirds done inspecting almost 90,000 public facilities across the country. The nationwide review will continue until July 30.

  • On March 25, a fire tore through the “Winter Cherry” shopping mall in Kemerovo, killing 60 people (including dozens of children). Investigating the tragedy, local officials uncovered numerous preventable safety violations.
