A severe storm in annexed Crimea overnight Sunday has left one person dead and seriously injured another four, according to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Emergency services are at work on the peninsula, and the Russian-installed Crimean authorities have appealed to residents to shelter in place and to avoid driving.

In Crimea’s largest city, Sevastopol, the storm caused power outages that affected over 2,600 people, state-owned news agency TASS reported. A further 300 people, including 43 children, were evacuated from the city of Yevpatoria and the Saki district.

In Yevpatoria, seven people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, two of whom were hospitalised, according to the Health Ministry.
