The First Appellate Court of general jurisdiction has dismissed the journalist Ivan Safronov’s appeal, upholding the 22-year sentence issued by the Moscow Municipal Court, which found Safronov guilty of treason. The journalist’s sentence is now coming into effect. Safronov will soon be transferred to a penal colony. Today’s hearing, as well as the entire trial, was closed to members of the press.

The Latvian Association of Journalists came to the defense of TV Rain, whose broadcast license Latvian authorities revoked earlier this week. In a statement, the Association said that authorities could “achieve a better result” by letting the network keep its license, while keeping a close eye on what it broadcasts. The statement’s authors say there is no doubt that TV Rain violated the terms of its license.

Russian President Vladimir Putin denies that authorities will launch a second wave of mobilization in Russia in the near future. He made an announcement to that effect during a meeting with members of the Presidential Council for Human Rights. “Discussions of additional mobilization measures simply don’t make sense, the state and the Ministry of Defense have no need for that at present,” Putin said.
