Number of coronavirus cases in Russia is three times higher than same period last year

The number of coronavirus cases in Russia this fall is three times higher than during the same period last year, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said during a meeting with President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday October 5.

“The increase in cases of the new coronavirus infection since the beginning of September 2021 has reached almost 31 percent. The seven-day average for [the last] five weeks reached 96.9 cases per 100,000 people. This is 3.1 times more than during the same period last year,” Golikova said, as quoted by Interfax.

Russia is on the verge of recording 30,000 new coronavirus cases daily. An increase in cases is being observed in 67 regions, the deputy prime minister said on Tuesday. However, according to Golikova, the federal government, together with regional authorities, have developed measures to protect Russian citizens from the coronavirus without introducing a lockdown.

Golikova added that compared to last year, the number of COVID-19 cases among children has “multiplied.” Deputy prime minister called for starting vaccination among children as soon as possible. In total, 42.2 million people in Russia are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

  • In recent weeks, Russia has registered record-breaking daily increases in coronavirus cases and fatalities. The country has recorded more than 25,000 new cases daily over the past four days.
  • On Tuesday morning, October 5, Russian health officials reported 25,110 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, as well as 895 deaths — the highest daily death toll since the start of the pandemic.
